HPV Vaccination for 12-Year-Old Girls—Make Up Your Own Mind

If you are the parent or guardian of a 12-year-old girl in Ireland, this may concern you. When your child is in her first year of secondary school, you will receive home a leaflet from the HSE. It will contain information about the HPV vaccine, which is recommended for her and which, it claims, will protect her against cervical cancer. You will be asked to give your consent. Like any parent, you will want the full information so that you can make an informed choice. The best choice for your child. To do this, you will need to know any potential side-effects of the vaccine. But the leaflet you receive from the HSE will list only five of these. None of which are serious and state that there are no long-term effects. But is this the full story? Merck, the manufacturer of the HPV vaccine Gardasil, lists 25 potential side-effects in its patient information leaflet. Some serious. They advise anyone affected to seek medical help, even months after having received the vaccine.
