A baby born in Lexington, Kentucky has tested positive for Zika antibodies. The mother likely contracted Zika while pregnant and traveling outside of the United States. The media immediately ran with fear-mongering headlines but forgot to emphasize a couple of important details.First, as I already stated, the mother contracted Zika while outside of the United States. Mainstream headlines ran with “Zika baby born in Fayette county” as the title, which scared some people into believing that the virus had been contracted inside of the United States. The second point is that both mother and baby are not contagious. They are not capable of transferring the virus to any mosquitos. To clarify, this means they are of no threat to any other persons or communities.
